Flag of Regt., 44th N.Y. Inf.
There is something remarkably beautiful and haunting about this scan of a 155-year-old glass negative. The flag is in tatters, but you can almost feel the smooth texture of the silk battle flag. Dig further into the history of the 44th N.Y. and you quickly see why the battle flag would be in such shape.
Considering the violence and carnage witnessed by color-bearers carrying the flag across the fields of the war’s bloodiest theaters, the colors become much more than ripped silk. It becomes a work of historical non-fiction, bearing the testimony of war.
